Having worked on a few film sets I feel dumb having to ask this but am confused - so please pardon the stupidity 🫣… · While documenting our collection I noticed older packaging often mentions only the distribution company & u have to look up which studio was behind it.If so, how does an independent production company go about making a major motion picture without the use of @ least a few of the studios resources? Share ... A film studio is a vague term that could refer to a distribution company, a production company, a co-fianancer, etc.A production company is a company that is involved to some degree with the production, be it the script, the filming, the financing, etc. The production company may also be the distributor (and the distributor may also be one of the production companies, especially before the 1990s). Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, Bad Robot, Village Roadshow, Amblin, BRON, and American Zoetrope are examples of production companies.Unless you’re specifically talking about a studio building ... Yes, I believe so! It happens all the time- shows, I'm not sure, but you'll see a movie with more than one company working on it-take this example of The Conjuring (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Conjuring). Think on this: there are really four phases of filmmaking: (i) development, (ii) financing, (iii) production (which is further broken down into pre-production, principal photography, and post-production), and (iv) distribution and exhibition.

Post-merger, New Paramount is setting out to make a splash with buzzy talent deals and (hopefully) big blockbusters. But the incoming Skydance overlords aren’t going to turn their noses up at what was already working with the studio, which means keeping Taylor Sheridan happy.Per The L.A. Times, Sheridan’s Landman has already been filming its second season there, and his show Lioness is expected to film there too. Coinciding with Texas legislation to incentivize production and entice the entertainment industry, it will reportedly be the largest studio facility in the state.“We are at a pivotal moment where Texas can become a global force in the film industry, and North Texas offers the location and resources to play a central role in this development,” Hillwood President Mike Berry said in a statement. In addition, they may have their own studio facility or facilities; however, most firms in the entertainment industry have never had their own studios, but have rented space from other companies instead. Day-to-day filming operations are generally handled by a production company subsidiary. The pioneering Thanhouser movie studio was founded in New Rochelle, New York in 1909 by American theatrical impresario Edwin Thanhouser. The company produced and released 1,086 movies between 1910 and 1917, successfully distributing them around the world. In the early 1900s, companies started moving to Los Angeles, California, for location shoots. Although electric lights were widely available by that time, none were powerful enough to expose film adequately; the best illumination for film production came from natural sunlight. The first film studio in Los Angeles was a branch studio of Selig Polyscope, in the Edendale area in 1909. The first studio in the Hollywood area was Nestor Studios, opened in 1911 by Al Christie for David Horsley. In the same year, another 15 independent studios settled in Hollywood.By the mid-1920s, a handful of American production companies had evolved into motion-picture conglomerates that owned their own studios, distribution divisions, and theaters, and contracted with performers and other filmmaking personnel. This situation led to the sometimes confusing equation of studio with production company in industry slang.Five large companies—RKO Radio Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer—came to be known as the Big Five, the majors, or the Studios in trade publications such as Variety; their management structures and practices collectively came to be known as the studio system. ... Although they owned few or no theaters to guarantee sales of their films, several other studios also fell under the rubrics above: Universal Pictures, Columbia Pictures, and United Artists.

Two Hollywood actors are establishing giant film production studios in Bastrop, Texas, as new incentive funds go into effect.
The updated rules and increased funding for the Texas Film Incentive Program will officially take effect on September 1, and filmmakers are already lining up to take advantage of the new opportunities. Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, who films the majority of his projects in Texas, is among them; he's recently leased two large studio production spaces in Fort Worth in preparation for the new era of Texas filmmaking. The city of is drawing new initiatives, such as Wyldwood Studios, a 75-acre development sparked by actor Zachary Levi (Chuck, Shazam!), who wants to take advantage of the Lone Star State's push to create a Texas alternative to Hollywood. The studio was proposed when President Trump's proposed 100% tariffs on foreign-made films and Texas's incentive boost campaign kicked into gear in late 2024.The estimated cost of the Levi-backed studio is around $100 million. The studio will adhere to the new guidelines of the state's film incentive program, which mandates a certain percentage of crew members to be residents of Texas. It will also utilize small towns as filming locations, which offer even greater tax incentives under the new rules. "We must create a place that is valuing the excellence of entertainment and that is valuing the artists who are making that entertainment," Levi said in a statement shared on the Wyldwood Studios website.

Rather than holding auditions or sending actors the script and pitching an offer, she would organize a meeting with Rogen and Goldberg.

In the American and international markets, the major film studios, often known simply as the majors or the Big Five studios, are commonly regarded as the five diversified media conglomerates whose various film production and distribution subsidiaries collectively command approximately 80 to 85% of American box office revenue.American studios have benefited from a strong first-mover advantage in that they were the first to industrialize filmmaking and master the art of mass-producing and distributing high-quality films with broad cross-cultural appeal.Today, the Big Five majors – Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Walt Disney Studios, and Sony Pictures – routinely distribute hundreds of films every year into all significant international markets (that is, where discretionary income is high enough for consumers to afford to watch films). The majors enjoy "significant internal economies of scale" from their "extensive and efficient [distribution] infrastructure," while it is "nearly impossible" for a film to reach a broad international theatrical audience without being first picked up by one of the majors for distribution. Today, all the Big Five major studios are also members of the Motion Picture Association (MPA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).Four of these were among that original era's "Eight Majors," being that era's original "Big Five" plus its "Little Three," collectively the eight film studios that controlled as much as 96% of the market during the 1930s and 1940s.
The "Yellowstone" creator, Paramount and billionaire Ross Perot Jr. have joined forces on a massive new studio just as Texas has gone big on a new tax incentive program for films and television.
The venture, announced Wednesday, comes on the heels of Skydance’s $8.4-billion takeover of Paramount and just as Texas has taken major initiatives to encourage more film production, having recently passed legislation increasing its film incentives program to $1.5 billion over the next 10 years. The permit allows Jenny Natelson to operate her 7K Studios at the former St. Francis Catholic Parochial School in Ranchos de Taos.
The Taos County Planning Commission last week granted a special use permit to Jenny Natelson of Taos to operate her 7K Studios at the former St. Francis Catholic Parochial School in Ranchos de Taos. “This project is near and dear to my heart because I want to be able to do something for the community that I was not able to do” as a child, Natelson told officials. “This was not an option for us growing up.” · Natelson said if she hadn’t taken a film production class in college, she might not be where she is today, with more than 12 years experience in the film industry. The Santa Fe Film Office was a joint venture reached through a memorandum of agreement between the city of Santa Fe and Santa Fe County. LaBar-Tapia believes such a model could work well in Taos. “Now, I don’t expect this production studio to be generating that kind of revenue,” Oswald told the Planning Commission. In the case of night filming, the 24-inch adobe walls of the former school’s gymnasium would block out sound. “If there’s a night shoot, that would be inside, and it would be soundproof,” she said. “We’re also adhering to the light ordinances, so minimal light pollution has been added into our proposal.” · Natelson anticipates less traffic than when the site operated as a school. 7K Studios must next submit a construction mitigation plan and building permit application to the Taos County Planning Department. The gymnasium at the former St. Francis Catholic Parochial School in Ranchos de Taos is set to be the site of a new film studio.
Bastrop's long-awaited 204Texas film studio is set to begin construction, preparing to open by 2026 as Texas undergoes 'Hollywood 2.0' transformation.
From Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone universe to Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson filming in Texas, the Lone Star State is quickly becoming Hollywood 2.0. With more film studios popping up across the state, one highly-anticipated Central Texas studio is planning to start rolling cameras next year.In 2021, Butler purchased a 546-acre property in Bastrop County near the Colorado River to create 204Texas, a self-sustaining film-play-stay hub designed to house actors, crews and basically everything needed for movie magic. Documents submitted to the City of Bastrop show how the land will be used.Studio 210, City of BastropConstruction on the studios was delayed for two years following back-and-forth incentive changes with the city, but it was ultimately annexed to Bastrop County in 2023 because the necessary incentives for the project exceeded the city's economic budget. State tax film incentives will help fund the new studios, an investment that Butler explained can benefit Texas' economy by hiring local crews and partnering with state universities to offer jobs and internships.Line 204 CEO Alton Butler told MySA that his new 204Texas film studio in Bastrop County is set to begin construction on September 2.
